What the live list measures

The list uses geocentric tropical longitude: a body is marked retrograde when its longitude is decreasing from Earth’s viewpoint. The calculation covers Mercury through Pluto, as well as the Sun and Moon for the complete position table. It describes apparent motion against the zodiac, not a planet reversing its physical orbit.

How to read a retrograde placement

The planet name identifies the body; the sign and degree locate it in the tropical zodiac. The daily rate shows the direction and approximate speed of apparent motion. A very small rate can occur near a station. This tracker does not calculate shadow-period boundaries or claim that a shared sky placement has a particular effect on your life.

Try this.

  1. Check the timestamp attached to the current list.
  2. Open a planet on Transits for its sign, degree and daily rate.
  3. Use your natal chart if you want to compare the shared sky with your own placements.

A little more context.

Can several planets be retrograde at once?

Yes. Each planet has its own apparent-motion cycle, so retrograde periods can overlap. The live list reports the calculated bodies at the same instant.

Are the planets actually moving backward?

No. Apparent retrograde motion results from the changing positions and motion of Earth and the other planet around the Sun.
