A transit chart is a time-stamped view of the planets from Earth. It answers concrete questions: Which tropical sign is Mercury in? Is Venus moving direct or retrograde? How close are Mars and Jupiter to a major aspect? The planetary table above answers those questions for the displayed instant, while the event calendar looks ahead to lunar phases and seasonal turning points.
Each tropical sign occupies 30° of ecliptic longitude. A planet’s degree places it within that sector. Apparent retrograde motion happens when its longitude decreases as seen from Earth. A planet close to a station moves very slowly, so the displayed daily rate helps distinguish a near-station from faster motion.
Mercury, Venus, and Mars are often discussed in relation to communication, connection, and action. Jupiter through Pluto move more slowly, so their sign placements describe longer shared periods in astrological practice. These themes are symbolic, not evidence of a causal effect.
A New Moon occurs near a 0° geocentric longitude separation between the Moon and Sun; a Full Moon near 180°. First and Last Quarter correspond to 90° and 270°. The phase illustration follows this calculated geometry; its orientation is schematic, not a view from your particular horizon.
Eclipses require additional alignment near the Moon’s orbital nodes. Most New and Full Moons are not eclipses. The eclipse cards show the next calculated global events and the time of greatest eclipse. Use a geographical eclipse map to determine visibility from your location.
The current sky is shared, but a personal transit reading compares it with the fixed placements in your own natal chart. A transiting planet in a sign is not enough to establish a personal effect; astrologers also consider the natal planet, exact angle, orb, and house context.
Begin by calculating your birth chart with a verified birth time and city. Then compare its degrees with the current planetary table. Keep a journal of observations instead of treating an interpretation as a guaranteed outcome.

Planetary positions, apparent motion, lunar phases, seasons, and eclipses are computed with the open-source Astronomy Engine. This page uses geocentric tropical longitudes, not heliocentric positions or constellation boundaries. Retrograde status comes from the change in longitude over a centered two-hour interval; daily rates are numerical estimates.
The initial sky is calculated and rendered on the server for each page request. Every snapshot carries its own UTC calculation timestamp. Live mode updates every minute while the page is visible, and refreshes when you return to the page or reconnect. Selecting a date pauses automatic updates and calculates 12:00 UTC on that date; “Return to live sky” resumes automatic updates. Failed updates retain the last successful calculation with an explicit notice. Current-sky responses cache for up to one minute. The calendar contains the next eight primary Moon phases, seasonal events within the next year, and the next global solar and lunar eclipses.
For independent reference, compare lunar and seasonal times with the US Naval Observatory’s Moon phase service and Earth seasons service. Consult NASA’s eclipse resources for observing paths and visibility. These are reference sources; Zenith is not affiliated with NASA or USNO and does not present this calculator as their live data feed.

A LITTLE MORE CLARITY
In astrology, transits describe the current or selected-date positions of the planets, often compared with a natal chart. This page shows the shared geocentric sky: tropical signs, degrees, apparent direct or retrograde motion, and major planet-to-planet aspects. Personal transit interpretations also require your birth chart; the shared sky is not a personalized forecast.
The planetary table marks each body as Direct or Retrograde using the change in its calculated geocentric ecliptic longitude around the displayed instant. Use the Now button for a fresh calculation and read the timestamp. Retrograde is apparent backward motion from Earth’s viewpoint, not a planet reversing its physical orbit.
Positions, lunar phases, equinoxes, solstices, and eclipse predictions are calculated with the open-source Astronomy Engine ephemeris. City coordinates for the birth calculator come from OpenStreetMap through Photon. The methodology section links to Astronomy Engine, the US Naval Observatory, and NASA eclipse resources for independent comparison; this is not a NASA data feed.
The initial sky is calculated on the server for each page request. Live mode refreshes automatically every minute while the page is visible, and immediately when you return to it or reconnect. The timestamp identifies the actual calculation instant. Selecting a calendar date pauses live updates and calculates that date at 12:00 UTC; Now returns to live mode. If an update fails, the last successful snapshot stays visible with a notice and retries automatically. Current-sky API responses cache for up to one minute.
The sky-event calendar lists the next eight primary lunar phases after the displayed calculation instant, including New Moon, First Quarter, Full Moon, and Last Quarter. These are global astronomical instants. UTC is the default display; choose your device time zone to see the corresponding local date and time.
An eclipse on this page is a global event, not a local visibility prediction. A solar eclipse is visible only from part of Earth, with totality or annularity along a narrower path. Lunar eclipse visibility depends on the Moon being above your horizon. Check NASA’s eclipse maps for the geographical path and local observing details.
No. The tropical zodiac uses twelve equal 30-degree sectors measured from the March equinox. Astronomical constellations have unequal boundaries, and precession changes their relationship to the equinox. The signs displayed here are tropical zodiac sectors, not claims that a planet occupies the corresponding International Astronomical Union constellation.
Aspects are angular separations between two planetary longitudes. This page lists conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines, and oppositions within stated orbs. Their geometry is calculated, while their meanings belong to symbolic astrology. Use them as reflection prompts; they do not establish that an event will happen or that everyone will experience the same effect.
