Aries begins the tropical zodiac. In traditional astrology it represents the impulse to start, speak directly and test a new possibility. Its fire symbolism emphasizes action; its cardinal mode emphasizes beginnings. Patience and follow-through offer a useful counterpoint to that first spark.
Aries traits Initiative, courage, directness
Taurus is associated with consistency, physical comfort and the value of what can be built over time. Earth gives its symbolism a practical focus, while the fixed mode emphasizes continuity. A Taurus reading often explores the balance between protecting something valuable and making room for change.
Taurus traits Steadiness, patience, appreciation
Gemini represents the exchange of information: asking, listening, comparing and making connections. Its air element emphasizes ideas, and its mutable mode emphasizes flexibility. In a chart, Gemini symbolism can invite a question about how curiosity becomes understanding rather than an endless collection of possibilities.
Gemini traits Curiosity, communication, adaptability
Cancer is associated with belonging, memory and the creation of emotional safety. Water emphasizes feeling, while the cardinal mode adds an impulse to respond and care. Its symbolism can be a starting point for reflecting on home, boundaries and the difference between nurturing someone and taking responsibility for their feelings.
Cancer traits Care, sensitivity, protectiveness
Leo represents creative expression, generosity and the wish to contribute something personal. Fire gives the symbolism warmth and energy; the fixed mode adds persistence. A Leo placement can prompt reflection on what feels meaningful to create, and how confidence can grow alongside the ability to share attention.
Leo traits Creativity, warmth, self-expression
Virgo is associated with noticing details, improving a process and making ideas useful. Its earth element emphasizes practical results, while the mutable mode allows adjustment. In symbolic chart reading, Virgo can raise questions about service, sustainable routines and the point at which careful attention turns into unnecessary self-criticism.
Virgo traits Discernment, usefulness, attention
Libra represents relationship, proportion and the ability to consider another viewpoint. Air emphasizes dialogue, while the cardinal mode seeks to initiate connection. A Libra placement can invite reflection on negotiation and reciprocity, including how to make a clear choice without requiring everyone to agree with it.
Libra traits Cooperation, perspective, fairness
Scorpio is associated with trust, emotional depth and the things that sit beneath the surface. Water emphasizes feeling and the fixed mode adds concentration. Mars is its traditional ruler; modern astrology also associates it with Pluto. Its symbolism can support reflection on vulnerability, privacy and the balance between commitment and control.
Scorpio traits Depth, commitment, emotional focus
Sagittarius represents the search for meaning through learning, experience and a wider view. Its fire element emphasizes enthusiasm, while the mutable mode remains open to possibility. A Sagittarius reading can explore the relationship between belief and curiosity: what gives direction, and what deserves to be questioned or revised.
Sagittarius traits Exploration, optimism, perspective
Capricorn is associated with structure, responsibility and progress that takes time. Earth emphasizes practical outcomes; the cardinal mode emphasizes organizing a beginning. Its symbolism can invite reflection on ambition, boundaries and the standards we choose to live by, including whether a goal leaves room for rest and support.
Capricorn traits Responsibility, discipline, purpose
Aquarius represents the relationship between individual ideas and a wider community. Air emphasizes thought, and the fixed mode gives convictions staying power. Saturn is its traditional ruler; modern astrology also associates it with Uranus. Its symbolism can raise questions about belonging, independence and remaining open to perspectives beyond your own.
Aquarius traits Independence, ideas, social perspective
Pisces is associated with imagination, sensitivity and the connections that are difficult to put into words. Water emphasizes feeling; the mutable mode emphasizes responsiveness. Jupiter is its traditional ruler, with Neptune added in modern astrology. A Pisces placement can prompt reflection on compassion, creative expression and the boundaries that make sensitivity sustainable.
Pisces traits Imagination, empathy, receptivity

Sun-sign compatibility compares broad symbolic styles. Signs of the same element are often described as sharing a language; Fire with Air and Earth with Water are common complementary pairings in astrology.
A fuller comparison—synastry—looks at two complete birth charts, including the Moon, Venus, Mars and the aspects between them. A sign pairing cannot measure trust, communication or the choices two people make.
Explore compatibility in ZenithThere’s more to you than your Sun sign.
Your Sun sign describes identity and expression. The Moon adds emotional needs and familiar rhythms. Your Rising sign is the zodiac sign on the eastern horizon at birth; it helps set the structure of the chart. A birth time and place let the calculator bring these pieces together.
Read these placements as parts of one picture. The planets, twelve houses and relationships between planets—called aspects—add context that a single sign cannot provide.

The tropical zodiac divides the ecliptic into twelve equal signs, beginning with Aries at the March equinox. Fire signs are associated with initiative and expression; Earth with practical experience; Air with ideas and connection; Water with feeling and imagination.
Signs also belong to three modes: cardinal begins, fixed sustains and mutable adapts. These are symbolic categories used to interpret a chart, rather than measurements of personality. Zodiac signs and astronomical constellations are different systems.
Read the guideRetrograde is a matter of perspective.
A planet is retrograde when it appears to move backward along the zodiac from our viewpoint on Earth. It does not reverse its orbit. The live sky shows this apparent motion with the ℞ symbol, calculated from changes in geocentric longitude.
Natal Mercury retrograde describes its apparent motion at birth, rather than a permanent condition. It does not establish someone’s ability or predict their future. A transit compares a planet’s current position with a placement in a birth chart. A shared sky calendar gives useful timing and context; it is not a personal transit reading without that natal comparison.
Read the guideIn Western tropical astrology, the zodiac is divided into twelve equal 30-degree sectors, from Aries to Pisces. A birth chart places the Sun, Moon and planets in those signs for a particular moment. The signs are a symbolic framework tied to the seasonal cycle; they are different from the irregular astronomical constellations that share their names.
Usually, this means your Sun sign: the tropical zodiac sign occupied by the Sun when you were born. The date ranges above are a useful starting point. If your birthday is near a sign boundary, calculate your birth chart with your birth year, local time and place to establish the Sun’s actual position.
The familiar date ranges run from Aries around March 21 through Pisces around February 19. They are approximate: the Sun enters each tropical sign at a specific instant that varies by year and appears on different local dates across time zones. Use the twelve-sign explorer above for a guide, and the calculator for a boundary-date birth.
Astrologers often compare signs of the same element, or Fire with Air and Earth with Water, as an introduction to compatibility. A fuller comparison, called synastry, considers both charts’ Moon, Venus, Mars, angles and aspects. No pairing is automatically successful or doomed; communication, values and lived experience matter more than a sign label.
Your Rising sign, or Ascendant, is the tropical zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at your birth. It depends on your birth date, accurate local time and birthplace. Enter those details in the birth chart calculator. A birthday alone cannot establish a reliable Rising sign, and an unknown-time result should omit it.
Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon when you were born. Astrology associates it with emotional needs and familiar responses. The Moon moves through a sign in roughly two to three days, so your Sun sign does not determine it. Calculate it from your birth details; if the time is unknown, check whether the Moon changed signs during that day.
Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are Water signs. Aries, Leo and Sagittarius are Fire; Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are Earth; Gemini, Libra and Aquarius are Air. These four groups describe symbolic styles in astrology. A birth chart usually contains placements across several elements, rather than expressing only the element of its Sun sign.
At a particular birth instant, the Sun occupies one tropical sign. A birthday near the change between two signs is often called a cusp, but it does not make the Sun simultaneously belong to both. Your chart can contain many other signs through the Moon, planets and Ascendant, which may explain why more than one description feels familiar.
They are different traditions. The familiar Chinese zodiac year animal belongs to a twelve-year cycle, and the year boundary follows the Chinese calendar rather than January 1. Western tropical Sun signs are twelve sectors of the zodiac tied to the seasonal cycle. Someone born in January or February should check the relevant Chinese New Year boundary before assigning a year animal.
For a complete birth chart, yes. If it’s unknown, the calculator shows a noon reference and possible planetary signs, without a Rising sign or houses.
A birth chart maps the sky at your birth. Transits show planetary positions at another time. The current sky here is shared by everyone, rather than a personal horoscope.
