How do I find my chart ruler?

The chart ruler is usually the planet associated with the Ascendant’s sign. Find your Rising sign in a known-time chart, then identify its ruler. Some signs have traditional and modern ruling planets, so the answer can depend on the convention used. A reliable birth time is necessary to establish the Ascendant first.

Put the symbols in context.

Once you identify the planet, read where it sits in the natal chart and which aspects connect it with other placements. For a Gemini Ascendant, Mercury is the traditional ruler; for a Taurus Ascendant, Venus. A chart ruler provides a thread through the interpretation, but it does not cancel the significance of the Sun, Moon or the rest of the chart.

A question to take with you.

Try: “What theme connects how I meet new experiences with another part of my life?” The ruler’s placement can offer a starting point for that connection.

Try this.

  1. Calculate the Ascendant from verified birth details.
  2. State the rulership convention and follow the ruling planet’s placement.
