What is a retrograde shadow period?

A shadow period is an astrological convention referring to the degrees a planet revisits before and after retrograde motion. It is not the same as being retrograde at the current instant. A planet can be moving direct during a so-called shadow period, so the two labels should not be used interchangeably.

Put the symbols in context.

The live tracker determines current motion from changes in geocentric longitude. It does not calculate shadow-entry and shadow-exit boundaries. Those require finding and comparing the relevant station degrees and crossing times. If a forecast mentions a shadow, ask which planet, which degrees and which method it is using rather than assuming that every direct-status answer contradicts it.

A question to take with you.

Try: “Does this date refer to a station, current motion or a crossing of an earlier degree?” A clear definition often resolves the apparent disagreement between calendars.

Try this.

  1. Read the current-motion status separately from any shadow label.
  2. Check the method before relying on a proposed shadow date.
